Classes at Clermiston

Class of the Week!

Our Digital Leaders will focus on one class per week, interviewing pupils, staff and PSAs to find out a little bit about what has been happening in their class.

One class will be featured per week!

P1A
May 2018

Primary 1a enjoyed their termly visit to Costorphine Hill this week. They have been exploring the changes of the seasons through this project and had a ‘Signs of Spring’ scavenger hunt to complete. P1a's challenge was to find 9 different signs of Spring and photograph these on the iPad.

We hope you enjoy our photos!

P2C
May 2018

As part of their Plants theme this term, P2C were still life drawing! They were using a pencil to create a shadow in their drawing as well as learning how to shade with a pencil. We were so impressed at how much detail they were including!

We asked some of the children what they were doing:

"We are drawing a plant from one position."

"We are sketching and shading with our pencil."

"Looking closely at the plant to get the right position and details."

"Looking and drawing really carefully."

Thanks for having us, P2C!

P2B
April 2018

It is P2B’s turn to be class of the week! When we went to see what they were up to, they were in the hall for PE. They had to make their way around three stations to practise different basketball skills - dribbling, passing and shooting. It looked really fun and we could tell that they were all trying their hardest.

We we also got the chance to take photos of the plants they have been growing in their classroom.

Thanks for having us P2B!

P7B
March 2018

As part of International Women's Day 2018, the girls from P7 were invited along to the Royal Bank of Scotland for an action packed STEM event. We found out that STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and was aimed at us girls because there are not nearly enough of us in the industry! We spend the full day taking part in coding workshops, hearing from women who are already in STEM careers and working with our classmates to solve engineering challenges. It was epic!

Meanwhile, back at school, the boys in our class were exploring the work of many inspirational women, past and present. It was an eye-opening day for everyone involved!

P6B
January 2018

P6B have been busy making iPods for characters in a book called Wonder, reading comprehension with newspaper articles, writing emails to Mr McIntyre and sending a text to a friend.

Isla told us about her reading task this week:

"I'm doing my comprehension and I'm reading an article called Pooch Poo Power! It's about this man who created an invention that turns poo into electricity!"

When we interviewed Sienna, she told us about her reading. "I'm reading from 'Snow to Woah!' and it is about snow all around the world!"

P1C
January 2018

This week, P1C invited us to see them making butterflies out cardboard tubes. They could decorate the wings using collage or paint. Here is what they had to say about their lesson:

"I'm putting on pieces of a kind of paper, gluing it and putting it on the butterfly to make it look pretty!" Amber

"We are using them for our feelings chart." Amilie and Hamish

The reason I used water paint and colouring is because they are my favourite!" Laurel

Thanks for having P1A, we think the butterflies look great and love how you are going to use them to show how you are feeling!

P3A
December 2017

It was a reeeeeally busy week for everyone this week, and P3A had so much they wanted to tell us about! The whole school went to the Lyceum to see Arabian Nights and we loved it. Oliver thought the dogs passing wind was the funniest bit in the show.

In Maths this week, P3a were learning about rounding. Isla likes rounding up to the nearest ten and Steven loves rounding up to the nearest hundred!

The class also told us that they have been working on their drawing skills by getting a photo of an animal but only using lines to draw it.

Thanks for talkng to us P3A!

P7B
December 2017

As part of their exploration into World War II, P7B became codebreakers for an afternoon! This was to help us experience and understand the challenges faced by the real people working in Bletchley Park during that time.

"It's hard but also really interesting!" Aimee
"I'm making my own code using the Digraph Cipher!" Ellie

Rationing and Cooking P7A
November 2017

On Tuesday P7A and P7B visited Edinburgh Castle to spend time in the WW2 experience room and do the WW2 trail through the National War Museum which is situated in the castle.  In the WW2 experience room we learnt about how different characters lives changed as a result of the war.  We read the stories of evacuees, soldiers, a prisoner of war and women taking on new jobs as part of the war effort.  The room is full of artefacts from the time such as gas masks, 1940s toys, an evacuees suit case, soldiers uniform etc to help pupils imagine life in the war.

On the WW2 trail in the Scottish War Museum we had a look at uniforms, gas masks, weapons and medals.

The highlight of the day was watching the 1 o’clock gun being fired and asking the soldier some questions.  He was happy to pose for a photo with us!

In class, the theme of our WW2 topic this week has been rationing so of course we had to try a recipe!  We learnt about how people’s diet had to change as a result of rationing.  We found it hard to imagine eating such simple food and so many vegetables.  We made a chocolate using rations and dig for victory vegetables (potatoes, sugar and cocoa powder).  The results varied but most of us agreed we prefer Nutella!

Money Money Money! P2C
November 2017

P2C have been busy learning all about money this week. To help them to understand, they have been taking away using number fans, findin change from 20p and counting in tens - forwards and backwards! When Mrs Mackie taps the tamborine, pupils can go to the toy shop and buy things with Mrs Thompson.

We chatted to some of the P2 children at the Toy Shop and this is what they said:

"I want to buy the dinosaurs!" Riley

"I bought a scorpion!" Lyle

"I bought a tractor!" Ashfaq

"I'm matching...so the 1 has to go to the 1 and the 2 to the 2!" Bethany

Thanks for having us, P2C!

Imaginative Writing with P4B
November 2017

P4B have been really busy this week, writing a story about a marshmallow! They were learning to use similes and adjectives, for example ' the marshmallow was as white as a snowman!'

As well as this, they have been making times table fortune tellers and dividing on their whiteboards.

A look at the Scottish Isles with P6B
October 2017

"We were learning about all the different islands around Scotland and all the islands around Scotland. Each different table got a card and it said what island you got and you had to try to find out facts using the iPad. I got the the Fair Isle and only 120 people live on there!" Ben

"Miss Grounds got us these really big bits of paper and we had to estimate a picture of the island and put the lochs in blue and the land in green. We wrote facts around them and labelled the island. We got in groups of three and then we coloured it in but Manaf got Pupil of the Week because the people in her group were absent that day! She did a good job!" Noor

Excellent Egyptians with P4A
October 2017

This week, the Digital Leaders caught up with P4A. Amy and Charlotte decided to tell us about what they have been doing so far this term. We found out that they were exploring Egypt and learning how to research, how to identify 3D shapes and how to write instructions along the way! Here are a list of things they have been learning:

"We were learning how to take notes about the River Nile. We were listening to Mrs Porteous' voice and we missed out all the small words and just put in all the big words. Then we put in the small words in another lesson to make it into a sentence. Then we turned the information into a poster! There were blank ones or ones with boxes so you could choose which one you wanted to use.

When we made the Shadufs, we worked in partners and used clay and pointy wooden thin sticks and then put it all together. We finished them a long time ago but everyone still loves them! We have a wee desk that we put them on so everyone can see them. By the Shadufs there are other things we can play with and open up, even mummies!

Outdoor Learning with P1B
September 2017

P1B went into the wildlife garden this week to make pictures out of shapes that they found. Brandon made a 'B' for Brandon out of sticks and is very proud of it.

Orla made a person out of sticks.

Ethan and Alfie made a "big giant giant!"

Max found two berries in the wildlife garden!
