School Closure Information for Parents and Carers

*Updated with Free School Meals info document 26th March 2020*

Please see below the email that was sent via ParentPay on Thursday 19th March 2020

Dear Parents and Carers

As you are aware, the First Minister announced yesterday that all schools and nurseries will close at the end of this week.

I know that this is a time of uncertainty for all of you and I wanted to share with you our plan of support for the coming weeks. We have been planning for this scenario and will now put these plans into action.

From Tuesday of next week all parents who are signed up to Parent Pay will receive daily information from your child’s teacher/stage team. This will give you advice on the following:

• 1 Literacy Lesson
• 1 Maths Lesson
• 1 Lesson from another curricular area (this will vary from day to day or week to week).

On a Friday there will be 2 lessons sent home.

It is very important that you are signed up to Parent Pay for each child you have at the school or you won’t receive all of the lessons.

We will also be sending home a list of useful websites and other activities for you to consider (see our Pupil Zone)
The communication will come from a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Our email address will be attached and you can direct any questions to us and we can then communicate with the teaching team.

We understand that parents will have a huge variety of pressures at this time so do not feel that you have to do every activity, every day. We are very sympathetic to different circumstances and are very keen that you manage your time and resources in a way that suits you. There will be no requirement for work to be returned – we trust you to discuss the work with your child in a way that suits you.

In addition to this we will be sending home with each child some resources that may help you with children’s learning. Your child may come tomorrow with 2 or more packs because they have told us that they live near/are friends with another child who is currently absent. If you receive this and can pass it on we will be very grateful.

If children are currently absent packs will be available between 9am and 10.30 am on Friday morning for parents or a friend to collect. Please come to the main school gym hall to collect.

If you, your child, or any member of your family is in isolation due to potential symptoms of the Coronavirus then please do not attend and ask someone to collect on your behalf.

If you have any initial questions or any concerns at all then please contact me:

gordon.mcintyre@clermiston.edin.sch.uk

If your question is relevant to a number of people then I will share my answer more widely.

Of course, we don’t know at the moment how long this shutdown will last for schools so our plans and provision may well change. My advice at the moment is to take things day by day. Give your children plenty of breaks, be led by their interests and working patterns and be very, very kind to yourselves. You will get things wrong – and that’s okay. We get things wrong every day. Accept it as part of learning and try again.

I know that you are all very resourceful people and will help your children learn in many different ways over the coming weeks. The staff team here are devastated that their time with their classes is being cut short, but we will all continue to work hard and we are here to help so don’t hesitate to ask us questions.

My final plea to you all is this. Please follow all guidance on self-isolating and social distancing where possible. We need everyone to be as safe and as healthy as they can be so that this school and this community can bounce back once this is all over. I hope that I will see you all before the summer and I will be in regular contact with you.

With love and very best wishes to you all.

Gordon McIntyre

Safer Internet Day (and beyond!) at Clermiston

On Tuesday 11th February schools, charities, organisations and police services across the UK will be celebrating Safer Internet Day.  The aim is to promote a safer internet for our young people.  This year, SIDUK is in the school holidays, but that won’t stop us!

The theme of Safer Internet Day this year is:

#FreeToBe – Helping children explore how they can safely be themselves in the online world

After we return from the February break, all pupils will be involved in activities and discussions about their use of the internet, particularly social media, using resources aimed at their specific age. To find out more information about SIDUK you can have a look at www.saferinternet.org.uk

Digital Safety Workshops

We would like to invite parents and carers of Clermiston pupils to join us at one of two digital workshops which we will be running.  The aim of these events are to increase your awareness of social media platforms used by pupils and as well as meet other parents/carers in a similar position.

We will run identical Digital Safety Workshops on Thursday 27th February and Thursday 5th March from 3.30pm – 4.30pm.

Due to the nature of this workshop, this is for parents/carers only. If you would like to join us, please complete the slip at the bottom of the letter that was sent home on the last day of term or email admin@clermiston.edin.sch.uk indicating who your child is and which workshop you would like to attend.

And in the meantime, check out our Online Safety page for grown ups!

A Very Clerry Christmas!

What a term it has been, with a whole school trip to see an Edinburgh Christmas Carol at the lyceum, Nursery and P1-2 Nativities, the Christmas Fayre, Christmas Jumper Day, Choir performances, a Science Fayre and a whole lot more! We would like to thank every single one of you for all of your support, especially at such a busy time of year.

Our Christmas Jumper Day was an incredible success, raising a whopping £456.81! Our Choir also raised £230 for St. Columbus Hospice from their performance at St. Kentigerns and we collected a fantastic amount of food for the Food Bank. Our Christmas Fayre was brilliant as always, and all the parents involved were absolute stars.

So thank you, all of these things make a huge difference to a lot of people and we could not have done it without you.
