Clermiston News 2018-19

Mini Reading Hubs

The Bookworms are setting up mini reading hubs throughout the school.  These will have free books for pupils to take home.  If you have any books at home which are in good condition please feel free to drop them into our hubs or hand them into the office.  We will need lots of books to keep our reading hubs stocked.  Look out for our mini hubs around the school.

Happy Reading!

Rights Respecting School - Silver Award Goal!

*UPDATE - WE DID IT!!! WE ARE OFFICIALLY A SILVER RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL! LOOK OUT FOR A DAY OF CELEBRATION WHEN THE FULL REPORT AND BANNER ARRIVES! WELL DONE EVERYONE!*

The time has come for us to apply for our Silver Rights Respecting School award!

We have been working incredibly hard to become a Rights Respecting School for a few years now. We are confident that we have helped both pupils and staff become a community in which our children feel safe, have built strong relationships and are actively involved in both school life and that of the Clermiston community.

The accreditation will take place on Wednesday 22nd of May, with the team speaking to grown ups and children to find out what we have been up to throughout our journey to becoming a Silver awarded school.

We always shout about what we get up to here at Clermiston; throught the website, Twitter, ParentPay and good old fashioned posters (and of course the children themselves!) but if you're interested in seeing more details then click here

Pupil Council Time Capsule!

The Pupil Council were invited along to Queens Manor, our local care home, to bury a time capsule to be unearthed in 50 years time!

Amongst our chosen items were a copy of First News, the lates David Walliams book 'Fing' (well, the cover...the book was too big!), a letter to Future Me by Melissa and of course, a school tie!

It was such a fun experience and genuinely intriguing for the children to think about where they might be when they are in their fifties and sixties!

Model United Nations

Some of our P7 pupils were selected to be part of the Model United Nations conference at the Edinburgh City Chambers on Monday 25th of March.

MUN is an activity that mirrors the United Nations, so pupils were given the chance to represent another country's views on the topic of Single Use Plastics and work out a resolution to solve it.

It was an excellent chance for our children to interact with children with similar interests, grow and develop their confidence with public speaking and build on their knowledge of what is going on in the world right now.

Currently we are a very active Bronze Rights Respecting school and we are hopeful that by participating in events such as these, we will shortly become a Silver accredited school!

EPSSA Cross Country Event

The sun shone for us at Duddingston Fields for the annual Cross Country competition! Our P6 and 7 runners, sporting our fancy new team t-shirts, ran the route with determination and confidence.

When we participate in events like these, it is yet another reminder of how talented our young people really are. This year we really wished we could have been allowed to take a larger team, as running the Daily Mile as a class has really increased overall fitness and stamina, giving us a much larger pool of children to choose from!

Well done to all who made it round the course!

World Book Day at Clermiston!

We are so excited about World Book Day this year! There are all kinds of things going on throughout the week to help us celebrate:

Drop Everything and Read
At 2pm each day, the whole school stops what they are doing and takes temn minutes to enjoy reading something of their choice. It's brilliant to see the range of things our pupils and staff love to read!

Reading Is Power!
We'll have a special assembly on Friday where we encourage our young people (and not so young people!) to either dress as their favourite book character or wear pyjamas - something we often wear when cosying up with a good book!

Blackwell's Book Shop
We wil be handing out £1 World Book Day Tokens this week, and Blackwell's are selling a selection of children’s books, including the special £1 books that can be exchanged for these!

Parents and carers are invited to visit with their child between 8.15am and 9.15am or 12.30pm and 1.30pm.

Nursery parents are invited to take their child to the book shop between 8.30am and 9am or 11.30am and 1.15pm.  P1-P7 pupils will also get the opportunity to visit during school hours.

If you are unable to attend, please feel free to give your child some spending money in a sealed and named envelope.  All books are priced at 20% off RRP and a 3 for 2 deal will be running.

A Gift!

It is also Internation Women's Day on Friday, so we though it would be fitting to gift a set of Little People books to each class to help them read about the achievements of some amazing women in our past and present!

Christmas Fayre is over for another year!

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Christmas Fayre! It was one of our busiest yet and there were smiles all round. We couldn't do it with out the amazing group of parents who worked tirelessly to set up the hall, take tickets, paint faces and organise elves! Looking forward to next year's fayre already! But first, a wee break!

P1s meet People Who Help Us!

The P1s have have the kind of week they will remember for a long time, with special visits from the Fire Brigade, the Scottish Ambulance service and the Police! The corridors were full of excited chatter (from the grown-ups as well as the chiildren!) as they learned about different people who help us.

We are very grateful to all the people who came to see us, including some of our own parents - thank you!
